Paint Correction in Washington, NJ
Paint correction is the process of machine polishing a vehicle's clear coat to remove the defects that dull it: swirl marks from automatic car washes, light scratches, water spot etching, holograms left by a rushed buffing job, and the chalky oxidation that shows up on older finishes. Instead of hiding those problems under a glaze or wax that washes away, correction levels the clear coat so light reflects evenly again. The result is paint that looks deeper, sharper and more like the color it was meant to be.
At Appearance Plus Auto Detailing & Powder Coating in Washington, NJ, every correction is done by hand by Rob Torres inside our indoor shop. That matters for polishing work. Controlled lighting shows defects that sunlight hides, and a clean, enclosed space keeps dust and pollen off the paint between stages. We measure, test and adjust as we go, because no two cars have the same paint hardness, clear coat thickness or history.
Because we also handle body repair and powder coating under the same roof, we can give you an honest answer when a scratch is beyond polishing and point you to the right fix instead of guessing.

What's Included
Thorough wash and decontamination
A full hand wash, iron fallout removal and clay bar treatment to strip bonded contaminants, so the pads work on bare clear coat and not on grit that would add new marring.
Paint inspection and depth readings
We inspect every panel under shop lighting and take paint depth readings to understand how much clear coat is available before any polishing begins.
Taping and trim protection
Rubber seals, plastic trim, badges and sharp body lines are masked off to prevent staining and to protect thin edges where paint is most vulnerable.
Machine compounding
On multi-step jobs, a cutting stage removes heavier swirls, scratches and etching by carefully leveling a very thin layer of clear coat.
Machine polishing and refining
A finer polishing stage removes the haze left by compounding and brings out full clarity and gloss. On one-step jobs, this is where most of the work happens.
Panel wipe and final inspection
Polishing oils are wiped away so we can see the true finish, check for anything missed, and prepare the surface for protection.
Our Process
- 1
Consultation and assessment
We look at the vehicle with you, talk about how it is driven and washed, and point out which defects can be corrected and which may need other repair.
- 2
Wash, decon and prep
The car is washed, decontaminated, clayed, dried and taped so polishing starts on a clean, safe surface.
- 3
Test spot
Rob polishes a small section first to find the least aggressive pad and polish combination that delivers the result. This keeps as much clear coat as possible on the car.
- 4
Correction stages
Each panel is worked in small sections, checked under lighting and re-measured where needed. Heavier defects get compounding, followed by polishing to refine the finish.
- 5
Wipe down, inspection and protection
Panels are wiped clean and inspected, then sealed with the protection you chose, whether that is a sealant, ceramic coating or paint protection film.
Options & Related Services
One-step enhancement
A single polishing stage that removes light swirls and restores gloss. A good fit for newer vehicles, leased cars or anyone who wants a big visual improvement without heavy correction.
Multi-step correction
Compounding followed by one or more polishing stages for vehicles with heavier swirls, scratches, etching or oxidation. This removes the highest percentage of defects the paint safely allows.
Spot and panel correction
Targeted work on a single panel or area, such as a scuffed bumper corner, a scratched door or a hood with water spot etching.
Wet sanding of isolated defects
Where paint readings allow, deeper isolated marks or paint runs can be carefully leveled by hand sanding and then polished back to gloss.
Headlight restoration
Yellowed, hazy headlight lenses are sanded, polished and protected to improve clarity and nighttime visibility.
Ceramic coating or paint protection film
Freshly corrected paint is the ideal base for our Ceramic Coatings or Paint Protection Film services, which help keep that finish looking right for longer.

What Customers Say
“This guy is the best in the business of auto detailing. Rob is very meticulous and pays attention to every detail. I've been to many detailing shops but Appearance Plus tops them all. I had many scratches in the back hood of my Cadillac and Rob made them disappear. Real nice guy! Definitely worth the money spent on detailing my car.”
“After twenty-one years, including eight years of unprotected outdoor storage, my 2005 Mustang had lost its luster and the paint had become a scratching post for neighborhood pets. After two days of diligent work, Rob restored the car's original shine, making it comparable to a mirror. Nearly a month later, the car still retains its pristine appearance as if it were the day I purchased it.”
Paint Correction FAQ
Will paint correction remove every scratch?
Not always. Correction removes defects that sit within the clear coat. If a scratch catches your fingernail or has gone through the clear into the color or primer, polishing can soften how it looks but cannot fully remove it. Those spots may need touch-up or body work, which we can also handle here.
What is the difference between a one-step and a multi-step correction?
A one-step uses a single polish to remove light defects and boost gloss. A multi-step adds a compounding stage first to cut heavier defects, then refines the finish. We recommend the level based on your paint's condition and your goals.
How long does paint correction take?
It depends on the vehicle's size, the paint's condition and the level of correction. We will give you a realistic time frame when we quote the job.
Is paint correction safe for my clear coat?
When done carefully, yes. We take paint depth readings, start with the least aggressive method that works and avoid unnecessary passes so as much clear coat as possible stays on the vehicle.
How do I keep the paint from swirling again?
Hand wash with a clean mitt and a pH-neutral soap, use the two-bucket method, dry with a soft microfiber towel and avoid automatic brush washes. Adding a ceramic coating or paint protection film also helps.
Should I get a ceramic coating after correction?
It is the best time to do it. A coating locks in the corrected finish and makes regular washing easier. We can explain the coating options when you get a quote.
